Maternity Shoot, Kelly and Greg

It’s always both a pleasure and extra nerve-wracking to work with friends, but Kelly and Greg were kind enough to trust me with both their wedding photographs and a maternity session. I can’t wait to meet the new member of their family! Apparently he’s been kicking up a storm and will be arriving in just a few short weeks. We started the shoot in Golden Gate park, on a day that turned out to be colder than expected, and after an hour we moved indoors. Both Kelly and Greg are super talented musicians (a skill I lack utterly despite my great appreciation of music), so we shot a whole set of images in their downstairs practice room.

Many more below the cut! Continue reading “Maternity Shoot, Kelly and Greg”

Latest Prop 8 Ruling – Unconstitutional

The San Francisco 9th Circuit court has ruled today to uphold Judge Walkers decision that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.

I don’t often post about politics on this blog, my emphasis here is to focus on the images. In this case, however, I feel that marriage equality is a hugely important issue and am astounded that so many people in my home state feel that two adult human beings should be denied that right based on sexual orientation.

Laws have no place in dictating people’s freedom of religion, or their right to marry. We live in a diverse and beautiful world with a wide range of human experience. I will always support the rights of all adult human beings to love whom they love. Marriage for all!

My favorite herald of spring, when the trees in our neighborhood burst into bloom with these fragile pink blossoms. According to a friend, they aren’t actually cherry blossoms, but ornamental plums. Which makes perfect sense, because I have never noticed any actual fruit produced by these trees! Still, they’re a lovely display, no?

Photobooth – The Dapper Crowd of ‘The League’

Recently I was was invited to run a photo booth at the infamous Mission Control, for their ‘League’ party. The theme was ‘Steampunk’, and people dressed to impress, as you can see!

Kelly And Greg – San Francisco City Hall Wedding

Radiant, and rainy. Two adjectives which describe my first wedding of 2012! It’s always an enormous honor when a friend asks you to shoot their wedding, in this case I was very touched when Kelly and Greg decided to book me for this day at city hall. We began with the appointment for their license, and in no time at all were standing in the Rotunda, surrounded by their closest friends and the officiant (who was absolutely lovely!). After, we headed up to the 3rd floor to take advantage of the incredible light up there for some portraits of the couple and their attendants.

I love Kelly’s 1930’s inspired dress and hat so much that I couldn’t resist processing a number of their images in velvety black and white – some of these shots remind me of my grandmother’s wedding album images, which were a big inspiration to me growing up.

Cylindropuntia bigelovii, ‘teddy bear’ cholla

There’s an enormous patch of cholla cactus on the southern slope of the road leading towards highway 10 on the way out of Joshua Tree, I always like to stop here and take a few photos. On this particular visit I couldn’t stop myself from talking to another photographer about his gear – he was lugging along a medium format Mamiya with a fancy digital back, apparently this was his fancy xmas gift to himself! Lucky guy!  These cactus’s are nasty things if you get the spines in your flesh, but they’re beautiful, and these were in flower. I spent a few minutes playing with another one of my presents – a set of Zeikos macro filters from David. These are a really affordable addition to your camera kit and as you can see, the quality is pretty good. I shot these with the Canon 50mm 1.4 and the 10x filter.

Macro samples below the jump..
